Rolex has a fascinating history that dates back to 1905, when Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis founded the company in London under the name “Wilsdorf and Davis.” Initially, they focused on importing Swiss movements and placing them in watch cases made in England. In 1908, Wilsdorf registered the trademark “Rolex,” a name chosen for its simplicity and ease of pronunciation in any language1.

Rolex quickly gained recognition for its innovation and precision. In 1910, a Rolex watch became the first wristwatch to receive the Swiss Certificate of Chronometric Precision. By 1914, the Kew Observatory in Great Britain awarded a Rolex wristwatch a Class “A” precision certificate, a distinction previously reserved for marine chronometers2.

After World War I, the company relocated to Geneva, Switzerland, in 1919, due to economic challenges in England. Rolex continued to innovate, introducing the first waterproof wristwatch, the Oyster, in 1926, and the self-winding mechanism, the Perpetual rotor, in 19312. These advancements solidified Rolex’s reputation as a leader in watchmaking.

Today, Rolex is synonymous with luxury, precision, and durability, and its watches are celebrated worldwide for their timeless design and exceptional craftsmanship
